Reduction Woodblock Print - Cape Flattery, WA
This original fine art print was created by hand-carving a block of wood and inking with oil-based ink.
In the reduction-method, areas meant to be un-inked are cut away leaving the image in relief. The entire series is printed in a single color, then the block is further carved to remove more material. This process is repeated for each layer of ink that is applied. Because the woodblock is reduced with each pass, it can only be used for one series of prints. Each print takes on a wonderfully ephemeral quality because no two images print exactly like another, and no future series can be made with the reduced block.
Five-layer woodcut. 6 x 8 inches (image) 9 x 12 inches (sheet).
Limited run of 12 printed on white, acid-free, 100% cotton paper.
Carved and printed by Benjamin.
